Community Open House at ION Facility during Doors Open Waterloo Region

Posted on Thursday September 07, 2017

Waterloo Region – On Saturday, September 16, residents will have an opportunity to tour the ION Operations, Maintenance and Storage Facility (OMSF) as part of this year’s Doors Open Waterloo Region event. The Community Open House will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 518 Dutton Drive in Waterloo.

The OMSF is the operational hub of the ION light rail transit (LRT) system. This facility houses the Central Control Facility for ION and is where the ION trains are cleaned, maintained and stored when not in service.

During the Community Open House, residents can view several parts of the facility, including the light rail vehicle (LRV) maintenance bays, the Central Control Facility and an ION train. Residents will also see the LRT infrastructure up-close, including the tracks and overhead catenary system that holds the wires that power the trains.

Staff from ION, Grand River Transit (GRT) and Keolis (ION LRT operator) will be on hand to answer questions about the ION LRT service and its integration with GRT, and safety around ION LRT.

Guests are reminded that the tour is self-guided and are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes as the facility is large and part of the Community Open House will take place outside where the LRT tracks are.
