Final asphalt paving on Caroline and Allen in UpTown Waterloo postponed

Posted on Monday June 12, 2017

Waterloo Region – GrandLinq has informed the Region that final asphalt paving operations on Caroline (Erb to Allen) and Allen (Caroline to King) in UpTown Waterloo have been postponed. The work, which was set to start yesterday (June 11), will be re-scheduled at a later date.

Final asphalt paving is postponed due to anomalies found on Saturday (June 10) during final testing related to cathodic protection. Cathodic protection significantly reduces rusting of metal fittings, increasing the lifespan of underground utilities.

As part of the quality assurance process for ION, testing is conducted in advance of final asphalt paving to confirm all elements of the underground systems are functioning properly. Preliminary tests along Caroline provided the expected results. Some anomalies, however, were noted on Saturday (June 10) during final testing.

Based on the inconsistency of these test results, the planned paving operations for Caroline and Allen have been postponed so that further testing can occur, and any necessary adjustments can be made before final asphalt is placed.

A new date for final asphalt paving on Caroline and Allen will be communicated once access and deliveries for impacted businesses have been coordinated.
