First ION vehicle Open House set for April 8

Posted on Wednesday March 08, 2017

Waterloo Region – Residents will have an opportunity to see and tour the first ION light rail transit (LRT) vehicle during a community open house on April 8. The event will take place inside the Region of Waterloo’s Operations, Maintenance and Storage Facility (OMSF), located at 518 Dutton Drive in Waterloo, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Staff from ION, Bombardier and GrandLinq will be available during the event to answer questions as residents tour the train.

The first ION vehicle arrived last month from Bombardier’s Thunder Bay plant, with numerous residents tracking its journey to Waterloo Region.

“There was tremendous excitement throughout our community as the train made its way to the OMSF,” said Councillor Tom Galloway, Chair of the Planning and Works Committee. “Now that we finally have the vehicle here, it makes light rail service more tangible. On April 8, residents will have an opportunity to see the vehicle up close and sit onboard one of the vehicles that will provide service in 2018. It should be a very unique and popular event.”

Bombardier and GrandLinq staff will perform a wide-range of tests on the vehicle prior to testing it on the track. The track testing phase is expected to begin in the spring and will initially take place along the ION test track, which runs from the Northfield ION stop to north of the Caroline/Erb intersection in Waterloo.

Bombardier has committed to delivering the remaining 13 ION trains to Waterloo Region by the end of 2017. The second ION LRT vehicle will be shipped from Bombardier’s Kingston plant in June or July.

Residents will have another chance to see the ION vehicle during Doors Open in September.
